AIA National Convention
14-16 May 2015 Atlanta, GA AIA Bucks County sent two chapter representatives to serve as voting delegates for the AIA National resolutions and attend the annual business meeting as well as leadership LU's. The Convention offered its (as always) highly anticipated keynote speaker series and firm/design awards. Former President Bill Clinton spoke before a packed house of his excitement for the future of architecture as our industry continues to rebound from the economic crisis we experienced not too long ago. Amidst the keynotes, LU's and Expo, it was a great opportunity for me to meet with other AIA PA chapter board members to discuss ideas for our upcoming Core Member Services Plan negotiations taking place with all Pennsylvania components this week. AIA Bucks County: Outreach
28 May 2015 Reading Flemington Intermediate School, NJ The AIA Bucks Outreach Committee strikes again! On May 28, Ian Hunter (chapter president-elect) and Jo Hohenwarter (chapter president) presented to Cate Sewall's 6th grade art class a small taste of the architectural profession. The class started with a quick slideshow presentation of famous built works to get the students architectural creativity flowing. Next, Ian and Jo presented some parti sketches they had done of architectural improvements to the students' very own school building. Then Ian and Jo challenged the students to conjure up their own architectural visions for the building, with the premise that the designs needed to make the school a place the students would want to come to on the weekend. The students did some preliminary sketching inside, then they were turned loose in the backyard to take ideas to paper with recently learned 2-point perspective drawing skills. Time flew by and soon the class reconvened inside to explore, group desk crit-style, the ideas each student had developed. The students had so much fun learning about architecture and working with Ian and Jo that they drew up a huge card, which Cate Sewall hand-delivered, thanking them for their visit. The president of the company led the tour and related his first-hand experience of the construction process with its numerous challenges and eureka moments. Reported by Charles Chichester, Assoc. AIA PA: Action Day
14 April 2015 Capitol Hill, Harrisburg On Tuesday, April 14, about 50 Pennsylvania-based architects assembled in Harrisburg under the direction of AIA PA's Steve Swarney, Holly Lubart & Amal Mahrouki. Among those attending were your chapter president, president-elect and past president (left photo). After meeting and mingling bright and early at AIA PA headquarters, the group of 50 architects disbanded to pound the *Mercer* tile in the halls of the capitol building, meeting with representatives from their respective districts. We lobbied FOR mandatory continuing education, student loan forgiveness, 3-year building code adoption cycles, and AGAINST the PlanCom moratorium. Your chapter officers personally visited 25 offices, speaking directly with several staff about these 4 issues and depositing information packets for the representatives' consideration. To conclude the trip, and as a special bonus, AIA PA staff arranged for a private tour of the capitol building including a visit to the dome above the main rotunda. Those in attendance received 1.0 LU. If you were unable to attend this year you can still contact your representatives about these issues. Every phone call, email or drop-in helps! Visit AIA PA's advocacy website and click on "Find Your Lawmaker" website to obtain representative contact information for your district. |

AIA Bucks County: AIA LU Chapter Event
19 February 2015 Plumsteadville Inn, Pipersville Architects, Associates and Allied members alike came together on a chilly Tuesday evening for some learning, libations and light bites. The evening started with a presentation by new Allied Member, Terry Tyson of Acentech. Terry gave us a refresher on what STC or NIC values to aspire towards with our assembly designs, and the pros and cons of using different resilient products in floor/ceiling assemblies. The next slice of education came from new Allied Member, Dan Wagner of Schluter Systems. Dan showed several installation demonstrations of various Schluter Systems designed to mitigate leaks in tile showers. Not ALL "business," the presentation also highlighted some glamorous shower products including linear, square and incognito drains. Thank you to Acentech and Schluter Systems for sponsoring the events food and drinks, and for putting on great presentations! Total attendees: 18 |
Mercer Museum Exhibit Opening: House & Home
23 January 2015 AIA Bucks County is proud to announce its support of the new House & Home exhibit currently running at the Mercer Museum in Doylestown! We encourage you to stop in and experience this new exhibit for yourself. On behalf of the Chapter, the Board attended the exhibit's Preview Reception on January 23rd and enjoyed a first glimpse of the displays before the grand opening to the public the following day. We were happy to be a part of this public service opportunity and look forward to building a lasting relationship with the Mercer and other local organizations. Learn more about the exhibit at the Mercer's website. "What makes a house a home? Throughout American history, people have lived in all sorts of places, from military barracks and two-story colonials to college dormitories and row houses. House and Home tours audiences through the past and present of houses both familiar and surprising. It explores the varied history and cultural meanings of the American home, from the Colonial period to today, through film clips, construction materials, domestic artifacts, photographs, and "please touch" elements." |
